Kings of Porto Novo descend from Dassa second king of Adja Tado. According to the legend, a day, a foreigner native of Djêbou Odé ( current Nigéria) called ADIMOULA came in the Adja country.

Highly skilled hunter and renowned magician, he helped king AHOLOUHO to push away the invasions repeated by his neighbours.

In reward, ADIMOULA received " AVADJO" (Oba-Adjo's ) title which means foreign king. AHOLOUHO also offered him in marriage his only daughter named DAKOHOUIN.

Of this union, were born two twins, DASSOU and DASSA, and a girl HOUINSIKPÈ.

DASSA  took for wife NA-GOUIN princess of a nearby state.

After DASSA's death, his descendants succeeded one another on the throne until KOKPON, the father of AGBANLIN.
